With Penny heading off to college before we know it, Dexter and I have been busy reading up on ways to get her ready for life away from home. From setting up an investment account to paying utility bills, Penny is set to take on plenty of new responsibilities in college and beyond. The good news is there are several ways to earn points and miles while getting the hang of being an adult. Here are a few of our favorites.
Paying utility bills
After a year in the dorms, many college students live off campus to save a few extra bucks. Luckily, there’s no shortage of ways to earn points and miles from utility bills that often come along with renting a house or apartment. For example, JetBlue TrueBlue members who sign up with Energy Plus receive a bonus of 5,000 TrueBlue points after their second month as a customer in addition to two points for every dollar they spend on the supply portion of their bill. United Mileage Plus members can take advantage of similar offers, such as 10,000 bonus miles following their second month with Energy Plus and two miles for every dollar they spend.
Paying for course books
While some parents are willing to lend a helping hand from time to time, many of today’s college students are largely responsible for paying their way through school. Travel rewards credit cards, such as the Citi Executive World Elite AAdvantage MasterCard, can help alleviate some of that burden when buying books. With a bonus of 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles after you spend $5,000 within the first three months, the card is a great way for AAdvantage members to rack up some extra rewards.
Opening an investment account
It’s easy for college students to spend more than they save. After all, tuition isn’t cheap! But while it’s certainly a good idea to knock out student loans sooner rather than later, contributing toward an investment account is an important step to a safe and secure retirement. Whether you’re looking to maximize your return on investment or points and miles earnings, the Delta SkyMiles program can help you get there.
For every $25,000 that’s deposited into a Fidelity investment account, SkyMiles members earn 15,000 miles. Want to invest even more? Good news – you’ll earn more too. Members are awarded 25,000 miles for a deposit of $50,000, and 50,000 bonus miles for deposits that top $100,000.
